Workshops April 18-20, 1999 Stratigraphic Correlations in the Cape Roberts area of the western Ross Sea, Antarctica. Location: UCSB, Institute for Crustal Studies. Participants included Bruce Luyendyk, Christopher Sorlien and Rhea Hamilton as well as researchers from Spain and New Zealand. Research Experience for Graduates Twenty-four graduate students are involved in research administered through ICS. These students are involved in field research both locally and internationally. Many have presented their research with talks or posters at professional meetings: e.g., American Geophysical Union, Geological Society of America, Seismological Society of America, annual Southern California Earthquake Center. In addition to the abstracts presented, ICS graduate students are also involved as co-authors on articles in referred journals. Rob Meyer spent three months last winter in the Antarctic working on using apatite fission-track and paleomagnetic methods to determine the location of range-bounding faults in the southern and central Ford Ranges of Marie Byrd Land. Molly Trecker received a Mildred E. Mathias Graduate Student Research Grant to collect shells on Santa Cruz Island for dating the marine terrace on the island. These dates will help in calculating rates of deformation on active faults and folds in the Santa Barbara and Ventura area. Antonio Garcia received the1999 University of California, Santa Barbara departmental block grant awarded to conduct dissertation research and the 1999 Sigma Xi research grant to conduct fieldwork for his doctoral dissertation. David Root is working with Brad Hacker on the "Exhumation of ultrahigh-pressure rocks in the Scandinavian Caledonides" and "Phase transformations and their effects on the thermal, petrological, and seismological structure of subducting oceanic lithosphere."
Research Experience for Undergraduates SCEC sponsored summer internships for three undergraduates: Javier Santillan, Leland Green and Lowell Kessel under the mentorship of Drs. Steidl, Nicholson and Sylvester, respectively. Each produced reports and presented their results at the SCEC annual meeting. Javier Santillans project entitled, "Understanding Ground Motion Variations at the Van Norman Dam Complex Site" included installing seismic instruments and collecting data. Javier used this data to compare it with the data received during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Leland Green studied the "Development of an Interface for 3-D Visualization of SCEC Earthquake Data on the World Wide Web". Leland has developed an interface that will allow viewers of the SCEC web page to access earthquake data, control the viewing perspective of these data, and produce time based animation of the database. The interface was developed using Java based tools. This will allow the interface to be displayed on any web browser (e.g. Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer) that has the ability to display Java applets. "Folding and Faulting along the San Andreas Fault, Palmdale, California; Implications for simple shear mechanics and education of the public" was the title of Lowell Kessels project. Lowell spent last summer mapping a section of the San Andreas Fault to better understand the movement in this tectonically active area. Senior Neil Morgan won the Chancellor's Award for Undergraduate Research this year! This award is made to one graduating senior campus-wide who has demonstrated superior independent researcha substantial achievement.
The Press Nicholson was interviewed by television and newspaper reporters about an earthquake in Oxnard last winter. Archuleta has also given many interviews this year to the press about earthquake activity around the world. Schools David Oglesby gave a talk to the undergraduate science internship program here at UCSB on July 9, 1998. Aaron Martin and David Oglesby did an outreach presentation at La Colina Jr. High on February 3, 1999. Also in attendance were Mike Watkins, Javier Santillan and Eleanor Jewel for training as future presenters. Graduate student David Oglesby and Mike Watkins did an outreach presentation at Laguna Blanca School on February 24, 1999. Researchers and students from ICS explained earthquakes and seismology to students and their parents at the Community Earth and Safety Day on April 10, 1999 at the Montecito School in Santa Barbara.
The Public Archuleta gave one of four general education talks during UCSB Parents weekend: "Earthquakes in Southern California." Carrie Glavich, Aaron Martin, Fabia Terra, Carey Marcinkovich, Karen Powers, Brad Cordova participated in the Santa Barbara Earth Day festival on Sunday, April 18. Fabian Bonilla and Aaron Martin did a presentation for SCEC interns at Jamie Steidl's Van Norman Dam borehole site near Northridge, California on August 15, 1998. Fabian talked about reference sites and the benefits of borehole installations. Aaron presented a brief overview of modern digital seismic recorders. Home Page || E-mail |
